My grandfather was a child of the Depression and he often told me stories about growing up in Baltimore – I especially appreciated the one where he and his friend chased the ice truck barefoot through the city streets. They wound up at the library, and when they inquired about checking out books, the librarian skeptically looked down at their dirty feet and said they’d have to go home, clean up, and get their mother to fill out a form. My grandfather did it; his friend didn’t.

I loved this story for two reasons: one, because the notion of chasing an ice truck barefoot through the city was so foreign to the childhood I knew, and two, because the idea of my grandfather being the one to clean up and return to the library wasn’t. It reflected his character and I could identify with him through it.

I never wanted to lose his wonderful stories, so I recorded him telling them. And I want to do the same for you.

I’m Kate Oakes with Tell It Like It Was. Over the years I have worked with numerous families and companies to preserve their stories of the past.

To start, we will discuss your goals over a free consultation call. Then, I will record interviews with one or more person of your choice from the comfort of their own homes. Finally, you can save the raw audio or video interviews, or I can edit them into an audio or video documentary, or transcribe them and pair them with photos to create a keepsake coffee table book.

I am an oral historian with more than 20 years of experience, who is also a relatable, interested, and trustworthy listener. My background in both American Studies (B.A., Miami University) and Journalism (B.S., Columbia University) make me uniquely qualified to preserve the stories of your past.

Please set up time for us to talk before your precious stories – and the connection they create to your past – are lost.

“If stories come to you, care for them. And learn to give them away where they are needed.”
